A photo of the block

Why, why, why - oh why?

That's the question lots of people are asking me. So I'm going to answer those that are frequently asked.

Why have a place in the sun?
Well have you ever been back to the same holiday destination more than once? I have, just the one time. Even though it had been a full 12 months since the previous visit, it was like I'd never left. I fell immediately into relax mode, as if it was a continuation of the previous holiday. So I asked myself, would having your own holiday place be like that?

Why Turkey?
It's affordable - for me that is. I've been on holiday to quite a few places and I've become disenchanted with the "Euro Zone". Going on holiday to an expensive place can be just as stressful as staying at home, so I wanted somewhere my money went further. I've been to Turkey, travelled quite a bit around it. I've never been to Bulgaria or East Europe for a summer holiday so I can't compare. Certainly you won't find a well-built 2 bed apartment in any other west European country for the same price as Turkey.

Investing in a holiday home also requires investment into the people who will look after your apartment, maintenance, property management, all those sorts of things. Turkey's cost of living is so much less than ours, the crime rate is low, there is less corruption than other areas I've heard about.

Why Altinkum?
It's affordable - for me that is. Your budget dictates what property you buy. I wanted the best for my money in an area that's likely to have a good re-sale value. Altinkum is a small holiday resort built firstly for the native Turks who would travel to the coast from Istanbul and as far away as Ankara. Now, it's a bustling and thriving resort, although not built up - no building is allowed to be more than 4 storeys high. The town will have a new Marina to berth the best cruise liners of the world and golf courses are also planned in the forthcoming years.

Why the apartment we chose?
It's the best! It's built by the best builder in Altinkum (all builders have to pay an insurance before they build and also a final "tax" after completion). It's the best finish on the apartment. The maintenance charge is slightly above average for the area but that's because the maintenance man lives on site. It's in the best location, just 6 minutes walk to the main road (where there are banks, supermarkets, Turkish restuarants and bars) and only 15 minutes to the main beach - the touristy areas.

And what else?
Wait till I tell you about the bank interest rates out in Turkey! There are thousands of Brits who have expatriated to Turkey, and about 5,000 in Altinkum alone. Brits are retiring early, selling their homes in the UK, buying up cheap (but good) property to live in and banking their cash. They are living off the interest which the bank pays monthly at between 15-20%.

Restaurants, Bars and Beaches - there's plenty!

Main Beach is about a 15 minute walk away. The water remains shallow and is not tidal so there's no massive waves (not great for surfers but is ideal for small children). There's a beautiful paved promenade which is lined with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. It comes to life in the evening when the Turkish staff will put on a dancing show for you and they'll have you up singing on the karaoke. If that's not for you then there's some fabulous restuarants there too.

Walk from our apartment down the "Back Road' and you will come to the smaller and quieter Second Beach. At the top of this beach you will find the large hotels, the usual bars and restaurants and also (pictured) VIP beach lounges. You pay a few Lira per person to have access to a private bar, cushions and sun lounges while floating on the sea. Some VIP lounges also give you use of pedalo canoes (wait till you see them) and a trampoline on the water.

Where is Altinkum in Turkey?

On the map you can see the main resort towns of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Didim (Altinkum). The closest airport to Altinkum is Bodrum Milas, which is in the middle of Bodrum and Altinkum. Once you arrive at Bodrum you can travel 1 hour 10 minutes to arrive in Altinkum, and 1 hour in the opposite direction to Bodrum.
It is also possible to fly into Izmir airport, however, the transfer time is longer at about 2 hours 15 minutes.
The transfer times may seem lengthy when flying into most resorts in Turkey, but you know you'll never been on a flight path, and the travelling is easy as there's very few traffic lights!
